The Vitale Brothers, known for their impactful murals and community involvement, took on a significant project in 2023, reimagining the Black Lives Matter mural in front of the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum in St. Petersburg. This project not only underscores their artistic talent but also their commitment to social justice and community solidarity.
In celebration of Juneteenth, the Woodson African American Museum, in partnership with the City of St. Petersburg and the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance, led a community effort to reimagine the Black Lives Matter mural. The Vitale Brothers resurfaced the roadway, preparing it for a collective painting effort involving 19 local artists. The unveiling event on June 19 featured local leaders and celebrated the unity and strength of the community (City of St. Petersburg) (St Pete Catalyst) (Creative Loafing Tampa Bay).
The reimagined mural serves as a powerful symbol of solidarity and a call for continued efforts towards equality and justice. The project brought together artists, city officials, and community members, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in fostering social change. The Vitale Brothers’ involvement underscores their dedication to using art as a means to support and uplift marginalized communities (City of St. Petersburg) (St Pete Catalyst).
